LLM Content Performance: Metrics That Actually Matter

When I first started testing LLMs for content, I was obsessed with traffic. If a post brought in visitors, I called it a win. But over time I realized traffic alone doesn’t tell me much. With LLM-assisted content especially, you need better metrics to see if it’s actually working.

Why Traffic Isn’t Enough

Traffic is like a vanity metric. It feels good to see numbers go up, but:

  • What if people bounce right away?

  • What if they never subscribe, buy, or engage?

  • What if the wrong audience is showing up?

That’s not success. That’s noise.

Metrics I Track Instead

1. Engagement Time

I look at how long people actually stay on the page. AI-generated content can sometimes feel flat. If readers stick around, it means the piece resonates.

2. Scroll Depth

Do readers make it halfway through the article, or stop at the intro? Scroll tracking shows me if the structure works or if I’m losing people early.

3. Conversions (Micro + Macro)

I track both:

  • Micro conversions → newsletter sign-ups, resource downloads

  • Macro conversions → demo requests, product sign-ups, purchases

If content doesn’t move someone toward a real action, it’s just fluff.

4. Return Visits

If people come back for more, that’s a trust signal. LLMs can churn out content fast, but consistency and depth are what keep readers coming back.

5. Content Shares & Mentions

I measure how often posts get linked, shared, or cited. AI can help with speed, but credibility comes from how people react to your content in the wild.

How I Check These Metrics

I mix analytics tools with AI itself:

  • Google Analytics 4 → engagement time, scroll depth, conversions

  • Hotjar / Clarity → heatmaps, scroll behavior

  • Ahrefs & SEMrush → backlinks, mentions, keyword lift

  • AI Assistants → summarizing performance reports and spotting patterns I’d miss

Sometimes I’ll even ask AI: “From this data, what posts have the highest engagement but lowest conversions?” That shows me where to tweak CTAs or offers.

Mistakes I Made Early On

  • Chasing clicks → I had posts rank for irrelevant keywords. Lots of visitors, zero leads.

  • Ignoring content decay → Old AI-assisted posts that once ranked stopped performing. I wasn’t refreshing them.

  • Measuring output, not outcomes → I bragged about publishing speed instead of results.

Now my rule is: don’t just measure what’s easy. Measure what drives the business.

Wrapping Up

Traffic is only the start. The real question is: what happens after the click?

When I measure LLM content, I focus on:

  • Engagement (time + scroll depth)

  • Conversions (micro + macro)

  • Return visits & shares

  • Business outcomes, not just rankings

The combination of human judgment + AI speed works best. LLMs can get you published fast, but performance comes from connecting with people.

If your content doesn’t move the needle beyond traffic, it’s not doing its job.
